In a fully online instructor-led course, instructor(s) and student(s) are not in the same place, and course interactions take place online; synchronously and/or asynchronously.
- Synchronous Online Course(s): Course interactions between instructor(s) and students(s) are scheduled at a shared virtual space, where interactions take place in real-time.
- Asynchronous Online Course(s): Course interactions between instructor(s) and students(s) take place at a different time and space.
During the pandemic, teaching efficiently in a fully online environment was a challenge for many universities and academic institutions in all over the world. To offer a high-quality online education and ensure its continuing development, Qatar University made a strategic decision by selecting some courses to be redesigned and developed to be taught appropriately in a fully online environment. The experience started near the end of the Spring 2020 semester and is still ongoing and in continuing development. Course redesign allows instructors to enhance their course based on feedback from students and peers by following the best practices for online teaching and learning with respect to international standards and models. The online courses were, from the outset, designed around a learner-centered approach and the interactive design of the course materials helped students learn more effectively and better understand and apply course concepts.
