    M.Sc. in Applied Statistics

The Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics at Qatar University College of Arts and Sciences, offers a graduate program leading to a Master of Science (MS) degree in Applied Statistics. This MS in applied statistics degree provides advanced training in applied statistics, exposure to statistics in a consulting or collaborative research environment and specialized coursework in a number of areas of emphasis. The program aims to prepare students for training and practicing statistics, to provide enhanced research expertise for students pursuing advanced degrees in other fields and to strengthen the statistical training of students preparing for Ph.D studies in statistics or a related field.

This program is the first graduate program in statistics in the State of Qatar and aims to meet the needs of talented statisticians with higher education to actively and participate more effectively in data analysis in various fields.

Statistics is a complicated and diverse field of study where methods and theories continue to develop at a very fast pace. The undergraduate degree in statistics is an extremely useful initial step toward understanding modern statistical methods. However, graduate study in statistics is necessary to provide a deeper understanding of statistical methodology and to provide a broader set of mathematical and statistical skills for proper use of newly developed statistical procedures.

    Mission

The goal of the MS in Applied Statistics Program at Qatar University is to provide highly quality specialized graduates with a rigorous training in statistics with an emphasis on Applied Statistics to enable them to provide professional statistical training and consulting services to the various academic and professional sectors in the Qatari and non-Qatari societies.

    Objectives

The MS program in Applied Statistics is an extension to the existing undergraduate program in statistics. The program aims to prepare students to be:

    • Proficient in data analysis and consultancy.
    • Competent in statistical methodology.
    • Effective at the transfer statistical results to users.

    Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion the program the students will be able to:

    • Extend their knowledge with an emphasis on the fundamentals of statistical.
    • Perform scientific statistical analysis on an innovative level in their career.
    • Use a statistical software package to implement new statistical methods.
    • Critically evaluate the statistical analysis in scientific literature for publications relevant to statistics.
    • Communicate effectively with statistics users.

Employment opportunities for graduates from the program include but not limited to the following:

    • Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA).
    • Qatar University and other Universities all over the world.
    • Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).
    • Supreme Council of Education.
    • Ministry of Interior.
    • Qatar Airways.
    • Qatar Petroleum.
    • Ooredoo.
    • Qatar foundation.
    • Local and International Banks
    • QF Research Institutes.
    • Sidra.
    • Qatar Bio bank

The Master of Science in Applied Statistics Program is accessible to students with first degree in a quantitative discipline such as mathematics, statistics, computer science, or engineering. Students from other disciplines other than statistics are required to finish preliminary Foundation Courses (Bridge Courses). Bridge Courses are:

    STAT 501: Mathematical Statistics

    STAT 502: Applied Statistical Methods

These courses are not counted toward satisfying the 30 credit hours required by the program.

All applications to Master of Science in Applied Statistics Program who meet the following minimum criteria will be considered for admission to Qatar University:
