QU Summer Research Internship Program 2023

Qatar University Young Scientists Center launches the QU Summer Research Internship program 2023 with the objective of refining the quality of internship experience offered to the students in the university thereby aligning to meet the educational excellence and graduate excellence goals set by Qatar University. The program aims to engage successful candidates with internship opportunities to enhance their research experience, augment their analytical and technical skills and thereby develop a substantial research culture. The internship program targets training undergraduate and graduate students by providing real-world experience-based training in research methods, laboratory-based skill development, and technique enrichment. This year it also offers three major tracks as detailed below for fostering students with enhanced research competencies and tangible outcomes.

    1. 1. Track 1: Outcomes directed Intensive research program:

This track is launched to engage students in acquiring knowledge in research methodology and culminating the project with tangible outcomes in the form of a publication. This program invites STEM-integrated multidisciplinary proposals from faculty members who are willing to engage students with outcomes-directed research with targeted TRL/SRL measures. This track will witness the participation of faculty from all QU colleges apart from the research centers in QU. The students will initially undergo a compulsory 1-week research methodology course followed by 2 weeks of research experience projects to meet the outcomes requirement.

Benefits to faculty members (Please see application criteria)

      • Acknowledged for the multidisciplinary STEM integrated proposal concept
      • Honorarium for each LPI: QAR 4000
      • Meet the KPI and appraisal needs

      Benefits to students

      • Scholarly publications
      • Research career exploration
      • Professional development with scholarly outcomes
      • Understanding the significance of real-world research and analysis
      • Instilling confidence and competencies in research
      • Competitive advantage in the job market

The best 3 projects will receive the following monetary appreciation.

      • 1st place- QAR 6000
      • 2nd place- QAR 5000
      • 3rd place- QAR 3000
    2. Track 2: Research and training focused:
This track offers research internships for 2 weeks by research faculty mentors in specialized domains of specific research areas. The students may choose any of the listed research topics, which will be published on the website.
    3. Track 3: External projects:
This track is exclusively for National undergraduate QU students and will be mentored by companies in Qatar in the areas of finance, management, science, medicine, education, arts, engineering, and technology. We are looking forward to enhancing opportunities for the students by extending collaboration over government & semi-government stationed institutions like ExxonMobil, QAPCO, Hamad Medical Corporation etc.

Students and Faculty mentors may apply to any of the tracks depending upon their choice.

    Criteria for faculty mentors:

Track 1: Faculty members participating in Track 1 should ensure that the internship proposal meets the following criteria:

    • Applicants from STEM colleges will have to integrate STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) aspects in their proposals.
    • Applicants from non-STEM colleges will have to integrate either Mathematics or technology part within their research proposal.
    • The internship proposal must offer research experience in real-world laboratories that culminate with outcomes with distinct TRLs/ SRLs.
    • The internship proposal also should reflect the scope for the participants to present the research outcomes in the form of a poster at the QU Annual Research Forum Exhibition and in the form of a research article to be presented/published at any tier 1 international venue.

Track 2: Track 2 faculty applicants may follow the application instructions in the later section.

This year, the internship is carried out in 2 phases:

    • Phase 1: from 12/03/2023 – 16/03/2023
o Initiation week for track 1
    • Phase 2: 11/06/2023 – 22/06/ 2023
o All tracks will initiate the research experiments/ skill development courses during the 2 weeks as per the timeline.
    • Faculty mentors will have to submit the proposal no later than 15th February 2023
    • Student Registration
      • Start date: 25th February 2023
      • End date: 7th March 2023.
