Introduction
University Young Scientist Center (QUYSC), affiliated with Qatar University, is a research-driven learning hub for scientific activities to empower the Qatari youth in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. QUYSC expands the existing highly successful project-based Research and modular STEM education carried out by Al-Bairaq, which was established in 2010. The center has highly experienced and trained mentors to supervise the young students to help them grow their careers as innovators and intellectuals by offering immense opportunities to cultivate their innovative skills and vocational ability and promote their research ideas
Program Overview
"Research Methodology" is the key to all research activities. Hence, during summer 2021, a course on the “Research methodology” for grades 4 to 6, has been proposed for the national students, helping them overcome the decline in their learning productivity and creativity. The young participants will learn different aspects of scientific research, such as the need for research, the importance of research, and how to do research. At the same time, the other benefits of the course include the students acquiring various skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, hands-on research experience, technical writing, and presentation skills. Various digital learning resources, including PowerPoint presentations, videos, online simulations, interactive quizzes & innovative games, are implemented as instructional tools to achieve the respective content objectives. Student activity tool kits are provided to foster hands-on activity experience. Feedback mechanism methodology will be executed to improve online instructional delivery in a student-centered approach, thereby aiding in the summer course content's qualitative assessment.
Program Flow
The program has been designed in such a way that the students will learn about the steps of research through a story.
Program Objective
The main goal of the offered program is to support the primary school students (grade 4 to 6) to:
- To help them develop the “research topic and research question/ problem” of their own
- To familiarize the process of “research methodology”
- To familiarize the students to “think creatively”
- Train to propose the “research hypothesis “to solve a research question
- Acquaint to test the research hypothesis by performing experiments (by hand-on training approach)
- To help analyze the results and test the reliability of the research hypothesis.
- To help conclude the hypothesis and close/proceed with the research
- To help develop advanced skills in research communication via presentations and scholarly & technical writing.
