    Research Ethics & Integrity

    Ethical Compliance Approval may be required from one or all of the below committees depending on the research project. Separate applications to each of the committees (as required for the research project) must be sent prior to the start of research.

    Institutional Review Board

    The primary function of an Institutional Review Board (IRB) is the protection of human subjects involved in research.

    Qatar University’s Institutional Review Board (QU-IRB), under the directives of Ministry of Public Health (MOPH), was formed as an independent committee under research compliance in September of 2011. All research that is to be conducted on human subjects must be submitted to QU-IRB for ethical acceptability.

    QU-IRB hereby affirms its commitment for being dedicated to implementing all the guidelines, regulations and policies set by the MOPH, aimed towards the protection of human subjects in research. It will ensure that all human subject research conducted or supported by QU faculty, staff or students, receives a proper IRB review as appropriate.

    QU-IRB is registered with MOPH under the following name and numbers:

    • Name of the IRB: Qatar University Institutional Review Board (QU-IRB)
    • Registration No.: IRB-QU-2020-006
    • Assurance No.: IRB-A-QU-2019-0009 (Expiration date: 26-May-2022)

    Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

    Mission and Vision

    The mission of the Qatar University’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (QU-IACUC) is to ensure the humane care and use of animals in research and teaching and to ensure compliance with guidelines and regulations.

    QU-IACUC’s vision is to ensure the humane care and use of animals while interpreting the regulations in a practical, meaningful, and reasonable manner that facilitates valuable research and teaching.

    Purpose

    QU-IACUC must approve any activities that involve the use of live vertebrate animals. Specific examples of such activities and/or uses are:

    • research, including field studies and clinical trials;
    • use of blood donor animals;
    • breeding colonies;
    • scheduled courses;
    • continuing education offerings.

    Faculty are expected to obtain QU-IACUC approval for these activities regardless of where the animals are maintained and/or the project is carried out. However, if a project is to be done at a site or in cooperation with an institution that has its own Animal Care and Use Committee, a copy of that committee's approved form may be submitted to the QU-IACUC.

    IACUC approval is not required when all procedures are being carried out on tissues obtained from a slaughterhouse or from animals euthanized for another purpose. If, however, animals are procured and euthanized/slaughtered to obtain tissues for a particular project, that project must be approved by the QU-IACUC.

    Partners

    The IACUC works closely with its program partners and the Institutional Official to assure that all components of the program are appropriately administered. We also work closely with the Laboratory Animal Research Center (LARC) at QU and other institutions within Qatar and abroad.

    QU-IACUC is registered with MOPH under the following name and numbers:

    • Name of the IACUC:  Qatar University- Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (QU-IACUC)
    • Registration No.:  IACUC-QU-2019-002
    • Assurance No.:  IACUC-A-QU-2019-0004 to (Expiration date: 20 – OCT -2022)

    Institutional Biohazard Committee

    The Qatar University’s Institutional Biohazard Committee (QU-IBC) is responsible for reviewing projects that involve, but are not limited to, recombinant DNA, RNAi, pathogens, human and animal materials (biofluids, tissues, etc), radioactive and other potentially infectious material. The IBC provides recommendations to the intramural community in matters pertaining to the control of biohazards associated with the use of microbiological agents and their vectors. It also represents the interests of the surrounding community with respect to public health and protection of the environment. Researchers who seeks IBC approval for their research work should fill the application form and submit to IBC committee’s email provided below.

    QU-IBC, under the directives of Ministries of Public Health (MOPH) and Ministry of Municipality and Environment, was formed as an independent committee under research ethics and compliance.

    Partners

    The QU-IBC works closely with its partners and the ministries to assure that all components of the safety and biohazard handling is taken care of. We closely work with Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental Office a division of Facilities and General Services Department at QU.
