Over the years, the field of public health has made significant contributions to the health of populations, with remarkable success stories, such as the global initiative for the eradication of small pox through vaccination efforts. Today, public health is at the forefront of the fight against the spread of non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases, and the harmful health effects of man-made and natural disasters. The core areas of public health are epidemiology, biostatistics, social and behavioral sciences, environmental health, health policy and health services management and administration.
Established in 2012, the Department of Public Health is the first of its kind in Qatar, offering both Bachelor (B.Sc.) and Master (MPH) degrees. The public health degree is interdisciplinary in nature, preparing students in the design, implementation, and evaluation of curative and preventive health services and programs from a population perspective. Using a public health approach, students learn to deploy sound scientific evidence to define a health-related problem, establish its cause, design an intervention, and evaluate its effectiveness.
Program Mission
The mission of the Department of Public Health is to provide leadership in public health education through high-quality experiential learning and relevant research that promote the ideals and practice of health promotion, disease prevention, rational policy making, and effective and efficient management of preventive and curative health services and programs.
