Welcome to the Department of Finance and Economics at Qatar University
It is my pleasure as the Head of the Department of Finance and Economics to introduce you to our dynamic academic community. Our department has recently undergone significant changes in both curriculum and structure, with a focus on enhancing the quality of teaching and research. We are committed to bridging theory with practice and placing particular emphasis on sustainability and technology, as well as on the local economy within a global and ethical framework.
Majors and Minors
Students in the College of Business and Economics have the flexibility to choose from a wide range of academic paths. We offer six majors: Finance, Economics, Accounting, MIS, Management, and Marketing. Additionally, students can select from seven minors: Accounting, MIS, Finance, Economics, Management, Marketing, and International Business.
Career Opportunities
The Department of Finance and Economics offers two robust programs: Finance and Economics. Both programs are designed to deliver high-quality, applied education relevant to Qatar and the GCC region. Our graduates are well-equipped to pursue careers as analysts, decision-makers, business model designers, and forecasters, with increasing emphasis on roles that address sustainability challenges and leverage emerging technologies.
Finance Major
Finance majors graduate with a Bachelor of Business and Economics, with the option to minor in areas such as Economics, Accounting, International Business, Management, or MIS. The Finance program requires 21 credit hours of specialized courses, including:
- Corporate Finance
- Investment
- Portfolio Management
- Financial Markets & Institutions
- International Finance
- Personal Finance
- Insurance and Risk Management
- Islamic Banking & Finance
- Financial Derivatives
Economics Major
Economics majors also graduate with a Bachelor of Business and Economics, with the option to minor in Finance, International Business, or to focus solely on Economics. This program also requires 21 credit hours of dedicated Economics courses, such as:
- Intermediate Macroeconomics
- Monetary Policy
- Econometrics
- International Economics
- Economic Development
- Industrial Economics
- Economics of Energy
- Managerial Economics

Student Community and Achievements
Our department fosters a supportive and engaging community where students learn not only from faculty but also from one another. This collaborative atmosphere encourages personal and academic growth. We are particularly proud of our students' success in the annual CFA competition in Doha, where they consistently take top honors. Additionally, some of our students go on to represent Qatar in CFA competitions at the regional and international levels.
Internship Program
Our students have the opportunity to participate in the College of Business and Economics Internship Program. This valuable experience allows junior business students to work with industry professionals during a summer semester, earning three credit hours and a salary. Internships provide practical experience and give students a competitive edge when entering the job market.
