Academic Year 2021 - 2022
- On the 17th of October, 2021 the ANNS center moved from online teaching and learning to face-to-face classes and was glad to meet on campus 112 students from more than 40 different nationalities.
- ANNS center started preparation of the online Arabic language course for Elementary learners which will be available on MOOCs starting from Spring 2022
Academic Year 2016 - 2017
- During the academic year 2016-2017 ANNS center organized a number of cultural trips and excursions to provide its students with a deeper understanding of the Arabic and Qatari culture and an opportunity to use the language skills, which they obtain in classroom, in everyday surrounding. The students enjoyed the MIA and Sheikh Faisal Museum excursions, trips to Al-Jazeera training center and Qatar Radio, participation in the Arabic Language Festival organized by Katara Cultural Village as well as they got a chance to spend the whole day in the desert in a real Bedouin camp.
- Due to the cooperation between ANNS center and Community College of Qatar twenty ANNS students were invited to participate in the cultural seminar on religious dialogue held on the 1st of April in the city of Al-Khor, Qatar.
- ANNS center in collaboration with the center of continuing education offers Arabic Language Training course aimed for Qatari residents willing to improve or obtain Arabic language skills. Elementary I level is suitable for people who have no prior knowledge of the Arabic language, while subsequent levels progressively increase the complexity of language concepts.
- ANNS center offers Arabic for Specific Purposes classes tailored to those willing to improve their knowledge of Arabic in limited contexts, such as medical care, business, banking, diplomacy and politics. The subjects taught and the teaching methods are developed to meet student special needs and expectations.
- According to the recently signed MOUs a number of students participated in intensive Arabic language courses offered by ANNS. During the academic year 2016-2017: ten students from Marmara University (Turkey) and ten students from Sakarya University (Turkey) attended a one-month intensive summer course; six students from the University of St Andrews participated in a one-term Arabic language course; four students from the University of Sydney attended a three-week intensive Arabic language course.
- ANNS center aspires to bring awareness to its academic and research profile as well as promote professional development of its faculty. To achieve this goal, a number of ANNS professors annually participate in top international conferences and research seminars held both in Qatar and abroad. During the academic year 2016-2017 the following conferences and research seminars were attended by ANNS professors Dr Abdullah Abdulrahman and Dr Muntasir Hamed: “History of Arabic Literature” (University of Kiev, Ukraine, 2016), “Seminar for Arabian Studies 2016” (the British Museum, London, UK), “Towards Multiculturalism, Coexistence and Growth in the Middle East” (Osaka University, Tokyo, 2016), “Arabic language and Applied Linguistics” (Doha Institute, Qatar, 2017), “Teaching of Arabic Language to Non-Native Speakers: Prospects and Challenges” (The University of Kerala, India, 13-15 February, 2017), etc

On April 4, ANNS center celebrated “Cultural Day” –an event aimed to raise students awareness, participation and engagement in the arts and cultural life of the university community. Various cultural activities were held on this day: drama performances, singing and poetry contests, intellectual competitions, etc.
24th of December 2016
On December 24, ANNS center held a cultural seminar under the title “Round the World in a Day”. The event consisted of two parts: “The picture of Arabs in different countries” and “Heritage and traditions”. During the first part of the seminar students presented reports about political, economic, social and cultural relations between their countries and the Arab World, while second part was dedicated to the presentation of cultures and traditions in students own countries.

The Arabic for Non-Native Speakers Center held the “Cultural Day”, an event dedicated to promote culture, arts and academic endeavor. The event included various activities such as cultural competitions and language quizzes as well as drama performance produced by the students. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by the students, academic staff and everyone present.
May 1-2, 2016
The Arabic for Non-Native Speakers Centre held the first international conference under the title “Teaching Arabic for Non-Native Speakers: Challenges of the Present, and Prospects of the Future”. More than 30 professors and specialists from the Arab World, Asia, Japan, Europe, the USA and Australia participated in the conference and presented recent researches in the sphere of Arabic language teaching to non-native speakers.

The Arabic for Non-Native Speakers Center held the graduation ceremony, in which 51 students from different countries and various cultural backgrounds received certificates and awards for successful completion of the one-year intensive course.

Thursday, June 12, 2014, the ANNS program held its graduation ceremony, in which 45 students from more than 20 countries around the world received certificates and awards for successful completion of the one-year intensive course.
September 2013
The Arabic for Non-Native Speakers program welcomed 53 new students representing 29 nationalities for a one-year intensive course. The program held its orientation day on September 12, 2013. The program’s director, Dr. Abdullah Abdulrrahman, greeted new students and spoke about the mission of the program, its objectives and policies. Students met their lecturers and professors as well as representatives of Career Services Center and Student Activities Department.

The ANNS program held its graduation ceremony, in which 44 students from around the world received certificates and awards for successful completion of the one-year course.
2nd June – 8th July
A delegation of 22 students from Marmara University, Istanbul attended a five-week intensive course in Arabic language at Qatar University and enjoyed a rich cultural program including a visit of Al Jazeera Channel, Museum of Islamic Art and other activities.

13-26 April, 2012: A delegation of 18 students from the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) de Paris and Sorbonne University attended a two-week intensive course in Arabic language at Qatar University and enjoyed a rich cultural program organized by the university and French Embassy in Doha. The program included a visit of Al Jazeera Channel, Museum of Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani, Al Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival and other activities.
January 2012
The Arabic for Non-Native Program hosted a workshop on Assessing the level of language skills for the learners of Arabic as a 2ndlanguage. The workshop took place from 23-26 January, 2012 and was delivered by Dr. Nabih Kanbar from Defense Language Institute, Monterey, California. The workshop focused on designing language proficiency test.
April 2011
April 10-20, 2011: ANNS hosted a delegation of 10 French students from ENS de Paris. The students attended ANNS classes for 10 days and enjoyed cultural programing put on by the French Embassy as well as Qatar University. April 24, 2011: ANNS students attended the Seventh Annual Al-Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival at the Sheraton, Doha. Films screened during the festival covered topics as diverse as the situation in Palestine, childhood in Afghanistan, living without money in Western Europe, music in Zanzibar, and US-Czech relations. Students took the opportunity to practice their Arabic by attending Arabic-language screenings or reading along with Arabic-language subtitles available on all festival films.

QU also covers the expenses of five Al Jamia Al Islamiya faculty and additionally sends QU lecturers as visiting faculty annually..."

Arabic Language Workshop for Non-Native Speakers
The Arabic Language Program for Non-Native Speakers (ANNS) organized a workshop on "interactive teaching" which took place January 11-14, 2009.
The workshop focused on the most effective interactive teaching methods of Arabic as a foreign language and discussed the proposed Arabic core curriculum courses for QU for foreign students. Workshop facilitators were Dr. Mahmoud Albatal and Dr. Christine Broustad from the University of Texas at Austin. ANNS Director Dr. Abdullah Abdul Rahman emmphasized the importance of this workshop for the professional development of the faculty. He also added that the workshop on it's last day will discuss the new propsed track "the paid program" which ANNS proposes to be active next fall. Dr. Abdullah stressed the significance of QU adminstration's supports to the program as it serves as a cultural bridge between Qatar and the rest of the world.
